Flying Eagle Penny

Flying eagle cents were minted between 1857 and 1858, though some 1000 to 2000 pieces where minted in 1986 as a pattern piece to show what the coin would look like. Designed by James B. Longacre, this first small-cent was made up of 88% copper and 12% nickel, and replaced the earlier larger cents. The unusually short mintage was due to two issues. One, the high points on both the obverse and reverse where at the same point in the coin, resulting in a weak strike at those locations. Second, Longacre was not able to satisfactorily fashion out the dies. The 1858 coins were of two varieties, a "large letter" and a "small letter". If the letters 'A' and 'm' are touching in the word America, then it is the large letter variety. In the small letter variety they are not.
