Lincoln Wheat Penny

The Lincoln Wheat penny was made between 1909 and 1958. During World War II, these pennies were made with steel due to a shortage of copper in 1943. Some 40 examples of copper 1943 pennies are believed to have been struck, with 12 confirmed specimens. Due to the rarity of the copper 1943 penny, they are a common counterfeit target. See Wikipedia for ways to tell a fake 1943 copper penny. Like the copper error for 1943 coins, some steel 1944 coins were made in error as well.
