I ordered a coin back on Oct 29th. Back when gold prices were hovering around $1000 / ounce. These coins came packed in a brown slip on case cover and the brown box contained a beautifully crafted brown wood box. The box is very different from the normal proof gold eagle coins. The eagle coins come packed normally in a cloth covered holder, this wooden box is quite pretty, but not nearly as elaborate as the lacquered UHR cherry case. The presentation holder has two magnets on the bottom which holds the coin up at an angle. The problem I had right away was when I tried to view the reverse of the coin. There was no pull spot to get any purchase on the coin holder. I had to turn it over on my bed and lightly tap the back to get the coin to fall out gently. This is a solid 24k coin and it will damage quite easily when abused so be careful. The other thing that struck me as weird, is the proof surface of the coin. It seems to be a wavy dimple like surface instead of the flat mirror like finishes I’m used to with the Eagle coins. Was the Mint doing this to add to the “antique” like nature of the coin or were they doing it as an anti-counterfeiting measure? It makes the back look more like a wavy watery surface than a mirror.
I will post pictures as soon as I have time after the holidays to take some good pictures. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Update: I just took some really nice pictures and uploaded them. Here are some close ups.
